Common Reed Bunting (Emberiza schoeniclus)
A slim, sparrow-sized bird with a long, notched tail, white collar, black head and moustache. The Reed Bunting is an amber list species. Populations fell 31% between 1970-2007 and partially recovered over the last 15 years. Numbers of small farmland birds have declined by 80% since the 1970s, part of an overall pattern of biodiversity loss across British farmland.
Our Wilderness Wetland project on Daylesford farm creates habitats for native birds. We manage the wetlands traditionally (inundation in autumn, draining in spring, grazing in the summer) to boost biodiversity; over 40 species of birds are now thriving there. We will donate 10% of profits from this item to the Farmland Bird Aid Network, a local charity devoted to the conservation of farmland bird species.
